The glassworks in Målerås was founded in 1890, a short time after the railway had found its way through the wilderness in northeastern Kronoberg. At that time, mouth-blown window glass was manufactured. Today, the focus is completely different. Målerås stands for high-quality crystal. On January 29, 1981, a historic contract was signed. A group of 15 craftsmen, including Mats Jonasson, bought the mill from Kosta Glasbruk. They also received great help from the locals. Of the village's 250 inhabitants, 80 invested in the mill. Since the modest new start in 1981, the company has developed and today it is Sweden's largest privately owned glassworks.
