Rosenthal was founded in 1879 in the German town of Selb, Bavaria. The company's founder, Philipp Rosenthal moved his porcelain painting workshop from Werl, North Rhine-Westphalia. The production of his own porcelain wares began in 1891. Between the years 1897 and 1934, Philipp managed a number of factories in the cities of Kronach, Marktredwitz, Selb, Waldenburg, Sophienthal and Waldershof. At this point, Philipp had over 5,000 employees under 10 different companies. Today, Rosenthal is one of Germany's largest and best-known companies for household goods and crockery. In 2009, the company was bought by the Italian manufacturer of kitchen equipment, Sambonet, and then changed its name to Rosenthal GmbH.
